When Amazon CTO Dr. Werner Vogels visited Terraformation’s pilot sites on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island, he got a firsthand look at how technology and local ancestral practices are working hand in hand to bring back the island’s native forests. In the newest episode of Amazon’s Now Go Build series, Vogels joins Terraformation CEO Yishan Wong to learn more about what it takes to scale reforestation.

Technologies like solar-powered desalination, seed banks, and the Terraware app are only part of the solution. When it comes to growing resilient, biodiverse, carbon-thirsty forests, community engagement is key. “Terraformation may be using cloud technology to design a solution for climate change,” Dr. Vogels observes, “but they also understand the importance of the knowledge of the people who will actually get down on their knees to plant a new forest.”

Watch the episode below to see how Terraformation’s team of restoration technicians, technologists, scientists, and keepers of traditional knowledge are working together to restore native forests — and develop solutions for our global future.
